How to Judge Good Carbide Blanks: Visual & Lab Inspection Checklist for Buyers

Rleey | How to Judge Good Carbide Blanks: Visual & Lab Inspection Checklist for Buyers

1. Introduction: Why Blank Inspection Matters Before Tool Making

Many tool manufacturers only find blank quality problems after grinding or coating. The cost of processing defective carbide blanks is much higher than the blank itself. This practical inspection checklist helps buyers screen out bad carbide blanks at incoming stage, reduce scrap rate and avoid hidden failure risks of finished cutting tools.

2. Visual Inspection Checklist: Check At First Sight

  • Surface: no obvious cracks, chipping, scratches, pits, black spots or oxidation marks
  • End face: flat, no edge breakage, no layered peeling on the section
  • Color: uniform metallic grey; abnormal lighter or darker areas mean uneven sintering
  • Contamination: no foreign particles, oil stains or residual mould release agent

Note: Visual check can only filter surface defects. Internal pores and microcracks are invisible to naked eyes.

3. Dimensional & Tolerance Check For Carbide Blanks

Inspection Item Common Standard Tool Maker Risk If Out of Tolerance
Diameter tolerance h6 / h7 standard for carbide rods Extra grinding allowance, inconsistent finished tool size
Length tolerance ±0.5mm or custom tight tolerance Material waste, unstable automation feeding
Straightness Low deflection for long rods Chatter during grinding, uneven tool edge
End perpendicularity End face square to outer cylinder Unstable clamping in grinder

4. Lab Test Indicators For Formal Acceptance

  • Density: match the grade’s standard density range, tested by Archimedes method
  • HRA Hardness: consistent within batch, no big fluctuation
  • TRS transverse rupture strength: reflects anti-break performance
  • Metallographic test: uniform WC grain size, no cobalt segregation, no abnormal pores
  • Ultrasonic inspection: detect internal microcracks and large pores for high-grade critical blanks

5. Common Hidden Defects That Visual Check Cannot Find

Internal micro porosity, cobalt segregation and subsurface microcracks are the most dangerous hidden defects. A blank may look perfect, but it will crack easily under grinding force or cutting impact. These defects are usually caused by poor powder mixing, unstable pressing or improper sintering curve. For high-volume or high-performance tool orders, batch sampling lab test is strongly recommended.

6. FAQs About Carbide Blank Acceptance

Q1: Can I accept carbide blanks only by visual check and caliper measurement?
It works for low-risk non-critical wear parts, but not for cutting tool blanks. Lab property test is necessary for stable tool life.

Q2: Is slight surface scratch always a reject?
Shallow scratches that will be fully removed in later grinding are acceptable. Deep scratches that extend into the carbide matrix must be rejected.

Q3: Do you provide inspection certificates for each batch?
We can offer material test certificates including density, hardness and metallographic report upon request.

7. Summary: Build Your Own Blank Acceptance Standard

A complete carbide blank acceptance combines visual screening, dimension measurement and lab material testing. You can set different strictness levels according to your finished tool type.
