Carbide Wear Plate Selection Guide: Material Grade & Thickness for Mining & Construction

1. Introduction: Why Carbide Wear Plates for Mining & Construction

Mining and construction equipment faces heavy abrasion, particle impact and continuous friction from ores, gravel, rock and bulk aggregates. Ordinary steel liners wear quickly, requiring frequent replacement and causing production downtime. Tungsten carbide wear plates serve as high-performance wear liners to protect equipment substrates, greatly extending service life and reducing maintenance costs. However, improper selection of carbide grade or plate thickness will lead to premature cracking or fast wear. This guide helps you select the right carbide wear plates according to your site working conditions.

2. Evaluate Your Working Conditions First

Before selecting carbide wear plates, analyze the following on-site parameters to avoid wrong material choices:

  • Abrasion level: Fine sand, gravel or large sharp rock particles
  • Impact load: Light sliding abrasion, medium impact or heavy high-energy impact
  • Working temperature: Normal ambient temperature or high-temperature environment
  • Material flow speed and pressure on the wear liner surface
  • Installation method: Welding, bolt fastening or embedding assembly
  • Maintenance expectation: Target service life and budget range

For pure sliding abrasion, prioritize high hardness carbide. When heavy impact exists, select tougher carbide grades to prevent plate fracture.

3. Tungsten Carbide Grade Selection Guide

Carbide Grade Type Cobalt Content Performance Features Recommended Working Scenario
Fine Grain 6% Co Extreme wear resistance, lower toughness Light impact, fine ore sliding abrasion, sand conveying chutes
Medium Grain 8% Co Balanced abrasion resistance and impact toughness General mining chutes, hopper liners, medium gravel handling
Coarse Grain 10%~12% Co High impact toughness, good anti-cracking ability Heavy rock impact, large stone feeding points, crusher protection

As cobalt binder content increases, carbide toughness rises but hardness and wear resistance drop. Fine grain grades are not suitable for heavy impact conditions because carbide plates may crack under repeated shock loads. Coarse grain carbide can withstand impact but wears faster under fine particle abrasion.

4. How to Choose Wear Plate Thickness

Plate thickness directly determines usable wear volume and material cost. Common thickness ranges for carbide wear plates are 3mm, 5mm, 8mm, 10mm, 15mm and custom sizes.

  • 3mm ~5mm: Light abrasion, low impact, compact installation space. Used for auxiliary guide plates and minor wear areas.
  • 6mm ~10mm: Most common specification for mining chutes and hoppers, balanced service life and cost.
  • 10mm ~15mm: Heavy abrasion areas with medium impact, long target service life, high-wear hot spots.
  • Above 15mm: Custom thick plates for extreme wear positions; higher raw material cost and heavier weight.

Tip: Do not blindly select thicker plates. If impact load exceeds the carbide grade capacity, thick carbide plates will still crack.

5. Common Installation Methods & Design Tips

  • Bolt-on carbide plates: Pre-machined bolt holes, easy disassembly and replacement, widely used for hopper liners.
  • Weldable carbide wear plates: Usually composite with steel base plate, convenient for welding on equipment surface.
  • Embedded tiles: Small carbide wear blocks embedded into steel matrix, suitable for curved surfaces and complex liners.

When installing solid carbide plates, avoid direct strong welding on the carbide body to prevent thermal cracking. Composite carbide-steel plates are preferred for welded applications.

6. Typical Applications in Mining & Construction

  • Mining ore chutes, transfer hoppers, silo liners
  • Crusher feed and discharge protection liners
  • Belt conveyor transfer point wear plates
  • Construction aggregate handling equipment, gravel screening machine wear parts
  • Slurry pipeline wear protection components

7. FAQ

Q1: Can carbide wear plates be used for heavy rock impact positions?

A: Yes, but you need to choose coarse grain high cobalt carbide grades. For extremely heavy impact, composite carbide steel liners are recommended instead of solid carbide plates.

Q2: What shapes of carbide wear plates can you produce?

A: We supply rectangular plates, tiles, curved plates and custom shapes according to drawings. Bolt holes, chamfers and edge treatments can be machined as requested.

Q3: Is there a minimum order quantity for custom carbide wear plates?

A: MOQ depends on plate size and machining complexity. Standard size carbide wear plates support small batch orders, and we can provide samples for performance testing.
