Mining & Construction: Tungsten Carbide Wear Plates for Abrasion Resistance

Introduction

Mining and construction machinery works in extremely harsh environments, constantly impacted and abraded by rock, crushed ore, sand and construction aggregates. Ordinary manganese steel and hardened steel liners wear quickly, which means frequent machine shutdowns, expensive replacement labor and lost production time. Tungsten carbide wear plates are premium heavy-duty wear protection components. Thanks to exceptional hardness and abrasion resistance, carbide plates protect the base metal of buckets, chutes, hoppers and conveyor transfer points, extending equipment service life and reducing total operation cost.

Abrasion Challenges in Mining & Construction

Two main wear types appear frequently on mining and construction sites: low-stress scratching abrasion and high-stress grinding abrasion. Sharp hard mineral particles keep sliding and gouging metal surfaces. Combined with periodic impact, material blockage and wet slurry conditions, the wear rate of liner parts increases sharply.

Standard steel liners consume material rapidly. Once the protective liner wears through, the main metal structure of equipment gets exposed. This may lead to structural deformation and unexpected breakdowns. Regular replacement disrupts production schedules and raises maintenance budgets continuously.

Why Tungsten Carbide Wear Plates Outperform Steel Liners

Tungsten carbide wear plates feature ultra-hard carbide working surfaces, usually bonded to a mild steel backing plate. Compared with traditional wear-resistant steel, they have obvious advantages:

  • Extreme surface hardness, resisting scratching and grinding from hard ore and stone aggregates
  • Excellent abrasion resistance, greatly reducing replacement frequency
  • Custom size and thickness available to match different equipment cavities
  • Stable performance under continuous dry or wet abrasive working environments
  • Lower long-term total cost despite higher upfront purchase cost

Carbide Grade Selection Guide

Working Condition Recommended Carbide Grade Core Features
Light abrasion, minimal impact YG6 High hardness, top-tier abrasion resistance
Medium abrasion, moderate impact YG8 Balanced hardness and toughness, widely used universal grade
Heavy abrasion with strong impact YG15 Higher toughness, prevents chipping under repeated impact loads

For chutes and hoppers suffering repeated rock impact, avoid overly brittle fine-grain carbide grades. Higher cobalt content improves impact toughness, while lower cobalt delivers better abrasion resistance. Our engineering team can recommend suitable grades according to ore hardness, particle size and impact force of your project.

Mounting Methods for Carbide Wear Plates

Three mainstream installation options are available for carbide wear plates:

1. Bolt-on Installation

Pre-drilled carbide plates fixed by bolts. Easy disassembly and replacement, ideal for positions requiring regular inspection and maintenance.

2. Weldable Composite Wear Plates

Carbide tiles attached to steel backing plates. The steel substrate can be directly welded onto equipment housing, perfect for large-area lining protection.

3. Adhesive Bonding

Used only for low-impact, smooth surfaces. Not recommended for heavy mining applications, mostly used for auxiliary local protection.

Mounting design must absorb impact stress. Poor installation is a common cause of plate falling off or edge chipping before the carbide surface is fully worn out.

Typical Application Scenarios

  • Excavator and loader bucket liners
  • Chute, hopper and bin wear liners
  • Conveyor transfer point protection plates
  • Crusher feed and discharge liners
  • Slurry and gravel pipeline wear segments
  • Aggregate handling equipment for construction projects

FAQ

Q: Can carbide wear plates withstand heavy rock impact?

A: Tungsten carbide is very hard but relatively brittle. It performs excellently against abrasive wear. For high-energy heavy rock impact, choose higher-toughness carbide grades or composite tile structures to reduce chipping risk.

Q: What thickness options can you provide?

A: Custom thickness ranges from 3mm up to 30mm. Thickness selection depends on target service life and actual load conditions.

Q: Can tungsten carbide wear plates be customized according to technical drawings?

A: Yes. We can manufacture custom-sized carbide wear plates based on your technical drawings or site measurement data.
